OUR LADY OF REFUGE

Fr. Anthony Tan Nguyen was born into a Catholic family with 6 brothers and 3 sisters. In 1980, when he was 10 years old, arrived and resided in New Orleans. While living there, he became a U.S citizen and continued his education as well. In 1988,  he moved to San Diego to continue the last year of education at Hoover High School. After receiving a high school diploma, he continued to study at San Diego State University, until he received a Bachelor Degree of Science in Criminal Justice.

He then worked as a Correctional Deputy Probation Officer and later transferred to San Diego County Deputy Sheriff and became a Deputy Sheriff. One day, after going home from work, he was involved in a near fatal car accident, he had severe back pain. At that moment, he then began pondering about his life and decided to pursue a priestly vocation.
In August of 2003, he was incardinated to the Diocese of San Jose and studied at Pontifical St. Patrick’s Seminary & University. In 2007, he did an internship for his Pastoral Year at St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish, while Fr. Andy Ligot was the Pastor there at the time. After one year, he returned back to the seminary to finish the last two years of the seminary formation. He was ordained as a deacon on Nov. 08, 2008, and was later ordained as a priest on May 23, 2009, along with Fr. Ernesto Orci, and five other
ordinandi. Fr. Anthony was assigned at St. Lucy for two years and later transferred to St. Patrick Parish and worked as a Parochial Vicar for 6 years. On August 30, 2012, the Church was burned down and renamed as Our Lady of La Vang Parish. Bishop McGrath transferred him to St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish as a Parochial Vicar in 2017. After serving one year as a Parochial Vicar at St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish, Bishop McGrath has transferred him to Our Lady of Refuge Parish to serve in the same position.

EL padre Anthony Tan Nguyen nació en una familia católica con 6 hermanos y 3 hermanas. En 1980, cuando tenía 10 años, llego y residió en Nueva Orleans. Mientras vivía allí, se convirtió en ciudadano y continuó su educación también. En 1988, se mudó a San Diego para continuar el último año de educación y después de recibir su diploma de escuela secundaria, continuó estudiando en la Universidad Estatal de San Diego, hasta que obtuvo el título de Bachillerato en Justicia Criminal.

Luego trabajó como oficial de libertad en la correccional y luego fue transferido al alguacil adjunto del condado de San Diego y se convirtió en alguacil. Un día, después de ir a casa después del trabajo, estuvo involucrado en un accidente automovilístico casi fatal, desde ahí tuvo un severo dolor de espalda. En ese momento, comenzó a reflexionar sobre su vida y decidió seguir una vocación sacerdotal.
 

En agosto de 2003, fue incardinado a la Diócesis de San José y estudió en el seminario de San Patricio. En el 2007, hizo su internado para el año pastoral en la parroquia San Lorenzo, mientras que el padre Andy Ligot era el pastor allí en ese momento. Después de un año, regresó al seminario para terminar los últimos dos años de formación en el seminario. Fue ordenado diácono el 8 de noviembre de 2008, y más tarde fue ordenado sacerdote el 23 de mayo de 2009, junto con el padre Ernesto Orci. Fue asignado en Santa Lucia por dos años y luego transferido a San Patricio donde trabajó como Vicario por 6 años.
El Obispo McGrath lo transfirió a la parroquia San Lorenzo como Vicario en el 2017. Después de servir un año como Vicario, el Obispo McGrath lo ha transferido a Nuestra Señora del Refugio para servir en la misma posición.

Quý ông bà và anh chị em giáo dân thân mến, Tôi là linh mục Anton Nguyễn Tân, được sinh ra trong một gia đình Công giáo với 6 anh em và 3 chị em. Năm 1980 khi 10 tuổi, tôi đến New Orleans, sinh sống ở đó, đă trở thành công dân Hoa Kỳ và tiếp tục việc học. Năm 1988, tôi chuyển đến San Diego để tiếp tục năm cuối tại Hoover High School. Sau khi tốt nghiệp trung học, tôi theo học Đại học San Diego, cho đến khi nhận được bằng Cử nhân Khoa học về Tư Pháp Hình Sự. Sau đó tôi làm việc với tư cách là Phó Giám đốc Quản chế Cải Cách, được chuyển đến quận San Diego và trở thành Phó Cảnh Sát Trưởng. Một ngày nọ khi đi làm về, tôi đă can dự vào một tai nạn xe hơi gần chết người và bị đau lưng dữ dội. Vào lúc đó, tôi bắt đầu cân nhắc về cuộc sống của mình và quyết định theo đuổi ơn gọi linh mục.

Tháng 8 năm 2003, tôi được chấp thuận của Giáo Phận San Jose và theo học tại Giáo Hoàng Học Viện St. Patrick. Năm 2007, tôi thực tập một năm mục vu tại St. Lawrence the Martyr parish, khi Cha. Andy Ligot còn là chánh xứ. Sau đó tôi quay trở về để hoàn thành hai năm cuối cùng của chương trình chủng viện. Tôi được thụ phong phó tế vào ngày 8 tháng 11 năm 2008, và sau đó thụ phong linh mục vào ngày 23 tháng 5 năm 2009, cùng với Cha. Ernesto Orci và năm cha khác.

Bài sai đầu tiên của tôi ở St. Lucy trong hai năm. Ngày 1 tháng 7 năm 2011, tôi lãnh trách nhiệm cha phó tại Giáo xứ Thánh Patrick Proto-Cathedral và tôi đã ở đây 6 năm . Trong thời gian này ngày 30 tháng 8 năm 2012, nhà thờ bị thiêu rụi và đổi tên thành Giáo Xứ Đức Mẹ La Vang. Ngày 1 tháng Bảy, 2017 Đức Giám Mục McGrath chuyển tôi đến Giáo Xứ Thánh tử đạo Lawrence. Sau một năm phục vụ, nay Đức Giám mục McGrath lại giao phó cho tôi trách nhiệm linh mục phụ tá và quản nhiệm cộng đoàn Việt Nam tại giáo xứ Đức Bà Chốn Tựa Nương bắt đầu từ ngày 01 tháng 7 năm 2018.
